Minnesota High School Music Listening Contest
The Minnesota High School Music Listening Contest is an independent not-for-profit competition providing an ideal opportunity to enrich students’ experiences with classical, ethnic, and popular music in a fun and competitive environment. In this statewide contest, students develop skills in active listening and critical analysis by learning to identify composers, cultures, periods and styles. Since its inauguration in 1987, the contest has attracted thousands of highly motivated students from across the state who possess a wide range of abilities and interests, particularly in the arts. The contest is designed to assist teachers in their efforts to expand students’ musical experiences through the examination of Western Art Music (global and cultural music traditions) and its ties to other art forms and politics throughout history.
The contest is open to all Minnesota high school students, 9-12th grade, from public, private, home schools, or music studios. Teachers or coaches recruit three students to form a team. The teams receive a Study Guide and repertoire CDs that contain all the musical selections they will need to compete effectively. All teams participate in regional competitions and first- and second-place teams advance to state competition.
The registration fee is $90 per team (3 student guides with 1 coach’s guide per school). Study Guides are about 80 pages and each contains three repertoire CDs with narration. This year, each coach and student participant will also receive a one-year subscription to Naxos Music Library for no additional charge ($245/person value). NML is the most comprehensive collection of classical music available online, with over 650,000 tracks plus educational resources. We’re very excited about this new partnership and the impact it will have on the students’ experience.
Study Guides will be mailed to registered and paid teams beginning in September. All teams compete at one of 10 Regional Contest sites on Jan. 21, 2011. The top two finalists (from different schools) at each regional competition advance to the State Contest on Feb. 4, 2011.

Don’t miss CB PRODUCTIONS adaption of WUTHERING HEIGHTS
A Summer Threshold Series* Script by Jane Thornton
Wuthering Heights, a place named after the harsh crags and the wind whipped grasses that make up the Yorkshire Moors, tells a disturbing yet enthralling tale of a love as wild and pitiless as the landscape itself. Heathcliff, a young Gypsy lad is adopted into the Earnshaw family and falls in love with the beautiful Catherine Earnshaw. Heathcliff and Cathy run free together on the moors until they are torn apart by the forces that surround them. Cathy’s untimely death causes Heathcliff to turn to vengeful thinking; plotting the ruination of all he considers responsible even if it means he has to wait to use his revenge on the next generation.
Considered to be one of England’s most acclaimed works, the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte is brought to life in Jane Thornton’s new stage adaptation. While the majority of the film versions of Wuthering Heights have focused only on the first half of Bronte’s work this two-hour adaptation (first published in 2005) tells the entire story. Jane Thornton’s ability to convey all the complexities of plot and emotion with respect for the original text, as well as recognizing the needs of a modern audience, is one of the major reasons that director Carla Barwineck was drawn to this particular version.
The multiple roles played by the eight actors demands a tight ensemble approach, while a simple set offers the crew the chance to concentrate on sound, lighting and costume to create for the audience the harshness of Wuthering Heights, the comfort of Thrushcross Grange and the wildness of the moors where the play is centered.
- CB Productions’ Threshold Series of plays is specifically designed and developed to give actors, ages 18-26 who are on the “threshold” of their careers, professional stage experience while learning various aspects of the business.

Volunteers Needed
for the MHA Phoneline
MHA is proud to serve folks interested in homeschooling, and those just getting started. We are currently in need of several Phoneline volunteers to help us with this mission. It is very rewarding work assisting others who may be feeling overwhelmed or who may be having trouble finding resources. It is also a great way to spread the word about MHA. Volunteers pick up calls from the phoneline once a week and return calls as soon as they can. Sometimes, you simply have to forward a message to the appropriate person such as to the membership coordinator or to the conference booth coordinator. It typically takes very little time, but can be extremely rewarding. We have all had questions come up about homeschooling and know how helpful it is to find someone to assist us. This is a great way to share your knowledge and expertise in a field we are all familiar with.
Please leave a message on the phoneline if you are interested!

Southwest Minnesota State University - Home of the SMSU Mustangs!
Our four-year public university is a liberal arts college located in Marshall, Minnesota. At Southwest, we focus on small class sizes and personalized attention with faculty and staff. Currently, we have 2,600 degree-seeking undergraduate students with an 18:1 student to faculty ratio. We believe that Southwest has many opportunities for students that are homeschooled because of our personal attention and genuine concern for their success. We involve parents throughout the whole process, from admission to graduation. Because our average class size is usually twenty-five students or less, the hands-on personalized curriculum that one receives when homeschooled would continue here. Our small class sizes and supportive student services on campus would be a great fit for them to help ease their transition into a college setting.
Would you like to schedule a visit or request information to be sent? Please feel free to visit our website at www.SMSU.edu or contact me via phone/email: Brittany.Krull@SMSU.edu or 1.800.642.0684 ext 6286. I look forward to hearing from you!
